Within each of us lies the desire to find meaning beyond the moment… to discover our true selves… to grow closer to God and to one another. A spiritual director can help you satisfy this deep, unmet longing.
What is Spirituality? Spirit comes from the Latin word 'spire' which means 'to breathe'. In essence, our spirit is what makes us alive. Spirituality is the practice of staying consciously connected with what makes us alive...within our own selves, with God, and with others..
What is Personal Spiritual Guidance and Direction? Spiritual Direction is deeply rooted in the Christian tradition since people sought the wisdom of the desert mentors and mystics in the third and fourth centuries. It is found in many major religious traditions. A spiritual director meets you where you are on your spiritual journey; whether you are active in a faith community or have not found your needs served by traditional religion.Explore: Spiritual direction encourages you to explore a closer relationship with God. In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, all of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love.
Discern God’s Presence: In spiritual direction, you reflect deeply on the experiences of your daily life. Gradually, you may begin to recognize God’s presence and grace in your life. You may come to realize how God’s spirit is truly with you every day and everywhere. You will be assisted in recognizing how the Holy Spirit, the true director, is leading and directing you toward a way of life that fosters an inner sense of well-being, and of experiencing love, peace and joy. You discover that God has been waiting for you to seek this closer relationship.
Spiritual direction is about awareness—looking at the many ways your life is influenced by culture, family, your past, relationships, religious background and beliefs, and other factors. It is a vehicle for discerning which of these influences are leading you toward God and wholeness, and which are not, and then making life-giving choices.
Grapple With Questions: A spiritual director supports you as you grapple with the questions of life and over time, live into the answers or learn to live with the questions. Questions such as “Where was God in this situation?” “Why does God allow pain and suffering?” “How is God seeking expression through me?” “What is God’s will for my life or in this situation?” How do I begin?
