Text Study for Sunday, April 27, 2025 First Sunday of Easter

Series Theme: Called Together And Sent Out

Reading: Luke 24:28-35

Connecting Question

What’s the longest road trip you have taken? Why was it memorable?

Prayer for Illumination

Everlasting God, the whole universe sings a new song of praise: the rivers clap their hands, the hills ring out for joy. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us voices ready to cry out for justice and proclaim resurrection joy wherever your Spirit leads us. In Jesus' name we boldly pray. Amen.

CONTEXT

Christ is Risen! Alleluia!

From Dr Matt Skinner at EntertheBible.org:

Concerning Jesus, Luke 9:51 says, “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” From that point, through the middle of Luke 19, Jesus journeys toward Jerusalem. This large section of text, which interpreters commonly refer to as the “travel narrative,” is composed mostly of stories that appear only in Luke’s Gospel. Disagreement exists over the degree to which the travel narrative might possess a sense of coherence or clear thematic purpose. Some see in the design of the narrative an attempt to make Jesus’ story resonate with memories of Moses and the Exodus journeys of the Hebrew people. Others conclude that in these chapters the Gospel author presents material about Jesus loosely grouped according to a few themes but with no comprehensive arrangement.

Look at the Book

  • How is it with your spirit this week?

  • Easter is a season of new life...in Christ. Where have you seen signs of new life this week?

  • Open to Luke 24:13. Jesus is risen! Now what?

  • Why do you think Jesus was in disguise in verses 14-17?

  • How were the two disciples feeling at that moment? Why? Have you felt like this as a follower of Jesus? When?

  • Notice that Cleopas’s story that he shares in the following verses is a “witness” to Jesus. What are the key parts of the Jesus story that Luke wants us to know?

  • Tell about a time you felt like hopes were dashed, but that was not the end of the story.

  • How does Jesus respond in verses 25-27? Why do think he did that?

  • How and when are their eyes opened?

  • What do you make of verse 32?

  • How do these stories speak to you today?

  • What would you like to talk about that we have not yet?

Taking it Home

Have a meal with someone this week and share about why you care about them.

God of the promise, you call your people together into your one mission in Christ’s name. Make us brave, grant us peace, challenge our expectations, and empower us to truly follow your Spirit’s lead. You are our one God who calls us together as one people, and we thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
